Insulation Terms
Asbestos- A fibrous mineral insulation
used in older homes. Improves fire resistance. Not used in new
construction as it is considered a hazardous substance according
to the EPA. Use care when checking for asbestos. Recommend certified
asbestos abatement contractors for removal or clean up.
Batting - Fiberglass insulation
with paper or foil backing, supplied in a roll. Designed to fit
between studs in wall.
Blown Insulation - Loose insulation
material which is blown into spaces between walls, or in attic
between rafters.
Fiberglass - A cotton like material
consisting of glass and resin
Firestop - A fire resistant material
used to impede the spread of flames in case of fire.
Foam Insulation - Polystyrene or
other expanding foam which is sprayed into gaps or wall cavities.
Foam Board - Light weight board
comprised of polystyrene foam and cut to fit between studs in
wall cavities.
R Factor - A measure of the efficiency
of insulation against heat or cold.
Vapor Barrier - A waterproof material
that prevents warm moisture laden interior air from meeting cooler
outdoor air and condensing.
