History
The Hough neighborhood is named after Patrick Hough (pronounced
Howk). He was born on the banks of River Shannon in Ireland on
St. Patick's Day, 1846, and began teaching there at an early age.He
emigrated to the United States in the 1880's, and settled in Vancouver.
His last assignment was as Principal of Vancouver High School
in 1899, a position he held until his "retirement" in
1908.
The Hough neighborhood is one of Vancouver's oldest neighborhoods,
and has the largest concentration of pre-World War II homes in
the entire Vancouver area. Some of the earliest homes were built
in 1900-1910 and were primarily Bungalo or Victorians style. Later,
in the 1920's and 1930's, Cottages, Bungalos, and Ranches were
built in the neighborhood. The Hough neighborhood is a great place
to start if you are looking for an older home with classic styling.
The Hough neighborhood has excellent access to public transportation,
I-5, and is close to shopping
